Governor Sandoval Dispatches From Iraq & Afghanistan
Earlier this month, I had the privilege of traveling to Iraq and Afghanistan to meet troops of Nevada serving in war zones, and our military leaders of both countries.
I wanted to share my diary of this trip to give you a first hand look on the people I met and the places I made the trip.
Day 1
Sign Governors Herbert Haslam Beshear in Washington DC. They are all very friendly and as excited as me. A lot of anticipation. None of them visited the Middle East before.
Arrival of the Pentagon are instructed. A huge building.There are portraits of all former Secretaries of Defense on the walls. We meet w Panetta Secretary in his office. I think it was on the job for less than a week.
Arrive Andrews Air Force Base, get on the plane. The aircraft is phenomenal. The flight to Shannon, Ireland is 5 hours +.
Ireland is green. If only we could have gone outside to see the countryside. After an hour, it's time to board again. The flight to Kuwait is another 5 hours +.
Dinner with the other governors. We have a long day tomorrow so we all changed into the clothes of tomorrow to sleep. Kuwait and Iraq.Must rest a little now, but I can not sleep.
Sun rises in the east. Looking out the window and see flashing lights. Realize that it's an escort of jet fighters keep us safe. We must be close.
Flying over Iraq. It looks like Nevada. The stretches of desert as far as the eye can see. No mountains. Just sand. No people, buildings or roads. Might as well be Mars.
About land in Kuwait, the temperature of 120 degrees. Land to Ali Al Salem base.
Arrival in Kuwait. Amazing to see the massive bunkers that bombed the U.S. destroyed after Saddam invaded Kuwait. Warmly greeted on the tarmac.The first person to say hello from Las Vegas. It is nice and go home in three days. It is based at Nellis.
We then prepare to load the C-130 for a flight to Baghdad and Balad AFB. Before we do, we are delivered from our body armor and helmet. It is crowded on the plane. It's hot, very hot. It is packed, too. We board with other guards 30-40. It is routine for them. Men and women of all ages. So intense, quiet, determined. In full battle gear, helmets, sunglasses and body armor on. A girl does not look one day older than Maddy and weighs probably 100 pounds.She is very polite and said she is with the National Guard of New Jersey. It carries a gun.
