In the beginning, there was Maxwell House and Mr. Coffee, and it was good, or at least good enough, to the last drop. Then through Peet's and Starbucks, we learned the joys of freshly roasted specialty blends from countries such as Kenya, Ethiopia and Guatemala. We diligently added grinders, French presses, moka pots and, for those with a few thousand bucks to spare, imported espresso machines to our home arsenals of caffeine delivery devices.

Joe Bean customers can still order their tried-and-true espressos, lattes and cappuccinos and drink them standing or seated at the bar. They can also have their coffee made in a classic French press and with a Chemex drip coffee flask. But what will likely be java terra nova for many coffee drinkers is the array of pour-over, slow drip and vacuum brewing equipment that makes this otherwise attractive upscale coffee bar and art gallery come off more like a high school chemistry lab bulging with Pyrex, scales, timers and burners. All of it certainly took me by surprise when I stopped in for an iced coffee a couple weeks ago. Joe Bean bar manager Ben Turiano (Kathy's son) spent the better part of a morning in Joe Bean's minimalist "coffee lab" introducing me to these third-wave brewing techniques, which fall under two general categories: pour over (your drip coffee machine is a gross example) and full immersion (think French press). Whichever method you use will highlight or diminish coffee's myriad complexities and characteristics, to the same extent that roasting also spotlights or hides flavor and aroma traits.

Cold-Pressed Coffee « Pink of Perfection

In time for the next day’s class. But my academic triumph was hosed by a couple in their late-20s sitting at the table next to me, in love and looking happy, who pinched my heart with an empty ache. Oh, the misery of a lovesick teenager.)

Once the Minnesota winter thawed, it was here that I learned about cold-brewed coffee. Deeply chocolately, without a whiff of bitterness, it was a revelation, and a recipe that speaks to the heart of any lazy girl. Combine coffee grounds with water. Go to sleep. In the morning, strain, and drink bliss.

This is a great way to make coffee when you’re camping or in a vacation house, and somehow magically––I can’t explain it––this method can transform even the cheapest tin-can coffee into something magnificent.

I have a great addition…the night before, after you set your coffee on the counter to rest overnight, make some simple syrup to sweeten your coffee. This simple thing makes the coffee feel like a special dessert as well as your required caffeine for the day! Plus, who likes that grainy sugar sitting at the bottom of the coffee?

Vanilla/Cinnamon Simple Syrup Huh! Never heard of this before! I’m not much of a coffee drinker but I think I have to try this! I love simple, revolutionary things like this that don’t cost much time or money. Of course, that’s the bread and butter of PoP… and why we all keep reading! Thanks yet again, Sarah.

(And thank you to Lizzy for sharing the simple syrup recipe. Must try that as well!) Ooooh! This was good Sarah! I make a simple sugar (1 cup sugar and 1 cup water heated until the sugar has melted into the water). I add the simple sugar and some skim milk to make my iced coffee. Better than Starbucks!

Also I was reading through your blog and stumbled upon your yogurt making adventures. I’m sure you don’t have time right now. However I bought a tube of regular yogurt and strained it for 24 hours using 2 layers of cheese cloth and an regular strainer. Then I whipped it up with my hand mixer…Greek Yogurt! Cheaper than buying it. YUM! Just add honey, berries, etc. etc. etc.
