Funding merit pay in Lee County
LEE COUNTY, Fla. - A merit pay plan in South Florida could help the Lee County School District find money for performance pay for teachers.
The Miami-Dade County School District is using millions from the Race to The Top fund to increase teacher salaries this upcoming school year.
Teachers in South Florida stand to make between $4,000 and $25,000 in bonus pay. Schools that maintain an A grade will get $500 for each teacher. Classroom with an increase in overall FCAT scores will get teachers an additional $500 yearly.
The head of the Lee County Teachers Association, Mark Castellano, says using federal dollars to pay for merit pay is a short-term fix. The district has $9 million in Race to The Top money to spend the next four years.
"The money is finite. It disappears and then what do you do?," he added.
School districts have until 2014 to come up with a plan for merit pay.
