Tours aim to boost East Lothian economy

Aberlady hotelier Fiona Duck joined other members of the East Lothian hospitality trade to launch a new series of bus tour itineraries that aim to bring an economic boost to the county.

Marketed under the title ‘Explore East Lothian’, they have been developed by East Lothian Council and local tourism specialists Steve Reed Tourism.

Now, coach tour operators from across the UK are being invited to visit East Lothian to see for themselves the wide range of attractions and destinations on offer.

Councillor Stuart MacKinnon, Cabinet Member for Economic Development and Tourism, explained: “The new tours have been carefully put together to appeal to the many decision-makers in the group travel industry who are there to help drive new bookings to our tourism industry.

“We’ve identified our best and unique selling points. There’s our wonderful coastline such as at Aberlady and North Berwick; the incredible history and heritage we have, for example at Tantallon Castle, Lennoxlove and John Muir’s Birthplace; internationally recognised visitor attractions of the stature of the National Museum of Flight, the Scottish Seabird Centre and Glenkinchie Distillery. We’re also including one or two hidden gems such as the Flag Heritage Centre at Athelstaneford, the Golf Museum at Gullane and Newhailes House.”

The tours were launched at East Links Family Park near Dunbar.

Led by Mrs Duck, the tourism industy representatives later took to the sea for a paddle at North Berwick along ‘The Golf Coast’ —home to East Lothian’s famous golf courses

The group then continued its tour of the county, calling into the Glenkinchie Distillery at Pencaitland. The six tours are: Glorious Gardens and Heritage; Mighty Castles and Beautiful Coast; Coach Stop Dunbar; Swing into Action; Great Scots and Flight of Fancy. They are free to coach and tour operators and group travel organisers.
