England’s red away shirts have been the biggest selling kits of all time, and with David Beckham likely to be recruited as one of the over-age players in the Team GB squad there is an expectation that the Olympic version could sell in huge numbers.

Beckham’s involvement is almost assured because of his marketing value and his long-term deal with Adidas, who will design and manufacture all Team GB kit including the shirt.

The financial importance of the football team emphasises the damage caused by the rancourous reaction on Tuesday to the British Olympic Association’s announcement of an “historic” agreement with the Home Nations that was almost immediately trashed by Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

The three Celtic unions claimed that they had not agreed any such deal, had not been informed that an announcement was imminent and would not under any circumstances endorse a united team.

In fact according to sources all three had given official and legal consent to the English FA to support the BOA effort to field a unified Team GB for the 2012 Games after being warned they breached several legal obligations if the selection policy remained exclusively English.

Telegraph Sport understands that the three associations had acknowledged in writing to the FA that it was legally entitled to support the BOA in the selection process, and were notified of an extensive time line detailing the process including a possible announcement in June.

These steps involved the FA and BOA agreeing on selection criteria that satisfies the Olympic charter and Fifa statutes and the FA’s legal counsel as well as announcing the head coaches for the mens and womens Team GB teams. All of the FA’s were notified of these developments.

The FA said: ” All three associations have notified us in writing that they acknowledge that legally we are entitled to support the BOA in the selection process”.

The home associations are also said to have agreed that they would be provided with the list of potential players so they could help determine which might be available.

Heat a strong brandy balloon under hot water, add all ingredients except cognac and orange zest into the glass and warm over a rocks glass full of hot water.  When warmed carefully ignite, rotating slowly to coat the inside of the glass and feed the flames.  Once the coffee beans become aromatic, add the remaining cognac and snap in the orange zest continuing to rotate and mix.  Extinguish the flame by placing a napkin over the rim cutting off the air.  Pour all into a fresh ambient balloon and serve.
