Communication
When you communicate with a co-worker or subordinate, it’s important to be clear about your message. This applies to both written and oral communication. The person you’re interacting with needs to know what it is exactly that you’re asking for or telling her. Speak or write in easy-to-understand language and don’t use long sentences. Be a good listener, as well. Focus on what someone is telling you and don’t tune out while listening or reading a message. If you don’t understand what someone has said or written, ask for clarification.
Appreciation
Appreciate your team. Show each team member that he is of value to you. Show interest when listening to your co-workers. Consider their ideas seriously instead of dismissing them out of hand. When you give someone feedback, be specific and honest to help him improve and grow in his role. Find something positive to say to him, especially if you’re also going to criticize him on a certain point. You could praise the individual on an idea he’s had, something he’s done, his motives or an important issue’s he’s resolved. When you criticize someone, suggest how he could improve in the relevant area.

Scheduling
As a nursing leader, you may have to schedule nurses’ shifts. To create a schedule that works, pay attention to the amount of time you’ll allow between each person’s shifts, decide how often a nurse will have a guaranteed weekend off and consider what effect holidays and vacation days will have on the schedule. You also will need to take into account the potential use of “float” personnel and part-time help, maximum and minimum work spans and whether days off will be split or consecutive. Delegate last-minute and daily schedule adjustments to an organized member of staff whom you trust.
