Switz City DJ changes with the times

Instead, it's all gone high tech.

Now, all DJ Marvin Holt of Face The Music Productions needs is his laptop, some Wi-Fi, and his amplifiers to accommodate almost any request.

Holt, 34, of Switz City, has been a DJ since he turned 21 in 1998, following in his father's footsteps.

"When I turned 21, I started doing karaoke," he said.

Now, access to the Internet means Holt's no longer limited to a crate of records or CDs as DJs once were. Spinning records has become a misnomer, but on the bright side, his potential playlist's expanded considerably.

"He'll play anything you want to hear. He's pretty on top of it," said Stephanie Barker, a bartender at Bottoms Up, 33 E. Vincennes St., Linton, where Holt's holding down a regular Wednesday residency. "He tends to play what people want to her."

Access through a laptop means Holt no longer has to worry about broken record needles or skipping CDs. Instead, his main concern's making sure the computer doesn't overheat.

"As long as I have Wi-Fi, it's pretty easy to find any song anybody wants to hear," Holt said. "If I don't have it, I can download it. ... People always say 'Have you got this music?' And if I don't, I can get it."

Bars also clear music played on jukeboxes and via DJs through fees paid to music publishing companies.

The new websites and servers allow Holt immediate access, so he can tailor his tunes to a given crowd.

Hence, whether he's playing private parties or on the microphone at Linton's Bottom's Up or Bloomfield's El Ranchito Mexican restaurant on U.S. 231, he can make the music fit the occasion.

Even so, he admits there's a major difference between Wednesday night crowds and weekend crowds.

"On Friday and Saturday nights, you're going to have a crowd that comes out and has fun, whether they have $5 or $500 in their pockets," he said. "It's been slower on the weeknights. It's been really dead sometimes."

Holt attributes the slowdown to warmer weather.

"It's been so hot, people feel drained. They don't feel like coming out, just staying inside."

Despite the technological upgrades, there's one thing Holt said disc jockeys still haven't invented a cure for: Getting worn out by hearing certain songs repeatedly.
