Garden sees the Games rooted in city
Plants and flowers from around the world have gone on display at Glasgow’s new Commonwealth Garden.
The garden – specially designed to represent the countries that will compete in the Commonwealth Games in 2014 – will provide a “green legacy” for the event’s host city.
Each area contains flowers and plants native to the countries, including a maple tree from Canada, rhododendrons from China, ferns from Europe, exotic African grasses and spiky phormiums from New Zealand and Australia.
The garden – at the North West Women’s Centre in Maryhilll – was officially opened by Councillor Archie Graham, head of Glasgow’s Commonwealth Games Committee.
In the run-up to the games, the centre is also planning a series of smaller projects, including teaching school children about the countries of the Commonwealth.
The garden was funded by a National Lottery Awards grant of £10,000 and has been created by volunteers with the help of Glasgow City Council, community group Sacro and designer Jane Gibb.
During the Games, children will pin small gold, silver and bronze medals next to the plants which represent the winning countries. At the end of the event, the plant with the most medals will be declared Commonwealth Plant of the Year.
North West Women’s Centre was Scotland’s first purpose-built women-only centre, opening its doors in 1993.
Since its creation it has helped thousands of women get support for difficult situations, such as domestic violence, single parenthood, mental and physical health problems.
Lynne Robertson, centre manager, said: “Our plan is to maximise the use of a large plot of grass, and turn it into a community garden which will improve the image of the centre and provide something nice for local people.
“We plan to get women who come to the centre involved in developing and maintaining the garden in the run-up to and beyond the Games in 2014, when the garden will be fully established.
