Newbury Market lands Giant Eagle

Newbury Market, the retail town center of a more than 300-acre brownfield redevelopment in South Fayette, has lined up two of Pittsburgh’s largest retailers as anchor of what is now expected to be a 1.2 million square foot development of retail, office and other commercial space.

Bridgeville-based EQA Landmark Communities, the developer of Newbury, said Tuesday that it has commitments from Giant Eagle , which intends to close a nearby store in order to move into the project. A representative of the developer couldn't immediately confirm if Giant Eagle intends its new store to replace an established supermarket it operates in nearby Bridgeville.

Along with the two announced retail anchors, EQA also announced that Harmar-based Kratsa Properties has committed to build a new 125-room Courtyard by Marriott hotel to LEED standards and Madison Realty will soon break ground on a 120,000-square-foot office building. EQA also announced that it has received preliminary approval from the U.S. department of Housing and Urban Development for financing that will enable it to build a 244-unit apartment complex at which rents are expected to range from between $1,000 to $2,500 per month.

In a written statement, EQA president Brett Malky expressed big ambitions for a project that, like so many, has had to fight through a deep recession that has caused retail development to slow dramatically and all real estate development to struggle.

“Newbury intends to be the new heart of the South Hills,” said Malky. “Newbury Market’s Main Street will serve as the new center of retail and relaxation for the region’s residents. They will find new restaurants, services and stores conveniently located in Allegheny County’s fastest growing community.

GAINSVILLE, Florida -- University of Florida researchers received a rare 25-foot-long, deep-water giant squid Monday, the only one of its kind in the collections of the Florida Museum of Natural History. Recovered by recreational fishermen who found the creature floating on the surface about 12 miles offshore from Jensen Beach Sunday, museum scientists collected the specimen from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission Tequesta Field Laboratory in Palm Beach County and returned to the Gainesville campus late Monday.
