Hints from Heloise: Fruit flies lose out to sugar, vinegar

DEAR HELOISE: I recently returned from vacation to discover that I had left a banana on the kitchen counter. Now I have a large flock of fruit flies in my house.

- Jane Woods, Austin, Texas

Dear Jane: What a welcome home! These small animals are usually brought to the house with fresh fruit and vegetables, and bananas are the most sensitive fruits. Take the fruit by placing in a plastic bag and then in a trash bag - ideally one in the trash outside because the fruit flies will continue their life cycle in or out of the house.

For any parasites left in the house, opt for this solution: Fill a pot with water and add a few runs so of vinegar and a little sugar to "soften" the trap. Next, cover the cup with plastic wrap and punch a couple of very small holes in it to make a trap. Again, the vinegar to the rescue!

Wipe a picnic table with vinegar to keep flies away during an event. Did not you just love vinegar?

DEAR HELOISE: Eureka! I think I found a solution to the ball-up, tangled sheets in the dryer. When you take the sheets from the washer, put all parts together and straighten the sides so that each sheet is like a parachute. Then, attach each to a node. Really! When a piece comes off - and it will - it is dry! With a fitted bottom sheet, just put all the rubber bands together and tie the leaves into a knot, too. It works almost all the time. Yes!

- Jo-Anne, by e-mail

DEAR Jo Anne: I tested several times, and guess what? I think it helps!

This may be the suspicion of the year! Thank you!

DEAR HELOISE: When I cut a plastic wrap to cover a dish or bowl, I let the bottom edge of the envelope before it is fixed in position on the item to be covered. It serves as a third hand.

- Dan Roberts, Prescott Valley, Arizona

DEAR HELOISE: Regarding the inadequate glue that manufacturers use the flap: The flap typically are not sealed, leaving content envelopes vulnerable to tearing, loss of contents, etc. It is a nuisance and expense to have to build components with tape.

- Kathleen F., Lexington, Kentucky

DEAR HELOISE: Recently, I was in line at the checkout at the supermarket. The customer in front of me was an element on the bottom of the basket that the auditor apparently did not see and failed to call. I told the auditor oversight, and the customer became furious and told me to mind my business.

Today's economy makes really think of additional purchases that much more important. Of the things we used to be able to just pick up and think "Why not?" We now have to think, "do we need?" Softener certainly falls into this category because it is a product entirely designed around comfort. So why should you use? Well, the first reason is that it is relatively inexpensive, and fluffy with a coupon, it can be even cheaper. You can also use it once a wash, and only a small amount, so the cost is really spread out over many many uses. The second reason is that the clothes are something you have on the go, and comfort and softness of the clothes is important. To be able to wear things that you love all day without feeling uncomfortable, some might say it's priceless!
