Teen charged following thefts at World Gym

On Thursday, June 9, Town of Hamburg Police responded to a call of a larceny which had occurred at World Gym in Hamburg on June 8.

According to police, the victim left her purse in her gym bag, which she then placed in an unlocked locker in the women’s locker room while she was working out.

Upon her return to the locker room she found that her purse was missing. The purse was found in a changing area, but the wallet, with $14, 12 credit/debit cards and personal papers, was missing.

On Sunday, June 12, two other members of World Gym reported purses had been taken from the locker room. One was later found in a bathroom stall and the other in the lady’s shower.

Two other people had reported items taken: a purse on Saturday, June 11 (found in the bathroom) and some makeup and a caddy.

Following further investigation, reviewing surveillance videos and working with World Gym staff members, a suspect was identified and apprehended.

The suspect, Tara Morabito, 16, of Hamburg, admitted to police going through the purses looking for money. She admitted to taking the wallet with the credit cards and throwing them into a dumpster at another location. She also told police she had done this at least one other time and taking at least $50.

Morabito was charged with felony fourth-degree grand larceny and petit larceny.

K-9 Endy helps with stop

At 6:17 p.m. on Tuesday, June 7, Town of Evans Police responded to a complaint of a vehicle being driven in an erratic manner on Erie Road.

When Officers Joseph LaRosa and Brian Kauzala located the vehicle, they observed it was lacking a front license plate, an interior review mirror and was weaving within its road lane.

The vehicle was stopped and the officers noticed a small yellow tablet on the front passenger seat. An empty prescription bottle, belonging to someone else, was found in the vehicle, which identified the tablet as conazepam, a controlled substance.

The officers requested the Town of Hamburg K-9 Unit and Officers Nicholas Borowski and K-9 Endy responded to the scene.

Endy indicated there was an odor of narcotics in the center console of the vehicle, along with the exterior driver’s side headlight and hood area. The vehicle was searched, but no narcotics were found.

Jacob R. Coudrey, 22, of Evans and Kevin D.

Abstract Introduction How the worm worked Worm event timeline Results of the investigation Cleanup activities Conclusions References Abstract

Three days before Christmas 1988, a computer worm was released on a very large international DECnet network. The worm reproduced itself and was received on an estimated 6,000 computer nodes worldwide. However, only a small percentage of these nodes actually executed the program. The computers that successfully ran the program would try to propagate the worm to other computer nodes.

The worm was released onto the DECnet Intemet from a computer at a university in Switzerland. Within 10 minutes after it was released, the worm was detected on the Space Physics Analysis Network, or SPAN, which is NASA's largest space and Earth science network. Once the source program for the worm was captured, a procedural cure, using existing functionality of the computer operating systems, was quickly devised and distributed. A combination of existing computer security measures, the quick and accurate procedures devised to stop copies of the worm from executing, and the network itself, were used to rapidly provide the cure. These were the main reasons why the worm executed on such a small percentage of nodes.

The purpose behind the worm was to send an electronic mall message to all users on the computer system running the worm. The message was a Christmas greeting and was signed "Father Christmas." This paper presents an overview of the analysis of the events concerning the worm based on an investigation that was made by the SPAN Security Team and provides some insight into future security measures that will be taken to handle computer worms and viruses that may hit similar networks in the future.

Introduction

The Space Physics Analysis Network, or SPAN [1], has been an extremely reliable international scientific computer network that has become a major element in NASA's quick reaction capability for supporting many major NASA missions over an eight-year period [2]. Major features of SPAN are its ease of use, efficiency, and availability to scientists conducting research in scientific disciplines such as astronomy, astrophysics, climate, Earth, ocean, planetary, life, and solar terrestrial science.

Currently, SPAN ties together well over 2,800 computers at NASA centers, other government agencies, private companies, and universities in the United States, with extensions to the European Space Agency's E-SPAN network. SPAN utilizes computer-to-computer communications (DECnet protocol) allowing mail, binary file transfer, and remote log-on capability. The majority of the computers connected to the network are VAX machines running the VMS operating system. SPAN is managed by the National Space Science Data Center (NSSDC), located at NASA's Goddard Space Fight Center (GSFC).
