Review: Money gives crowd its money's worth

PLAINS TWP. - Mohegan Sun at Pocono Downs kicked off their 2011 outdoor concert series in grand fashion Sunday evening featuring the music of New York hit maker Eddie Money before a sell-out audience of 4,500 people.

Money effectively owned the airwaves and early days of MTV in the late 1970s and early 1980s with a string of hits including "Two Tickets to Paradise," "Shakin'," "Baby Hold On" and then later, a duet with Ronnie Spector that topped the charts called "Take Me Home Tonight/Be My Baby."

Money was an excellent choice to jump-start the new season as he had the huge opening night turnout on their feet throughout the show.

The 62-year-old former New York City police officer ignited the audience early on and worked the stage energetically for more than 90 sweat-soaked minutes. In Springsteen-fashion, Money worked seemingly tirelessly, roaming the Mohegan Sun platform playing guitar, saxophone and belting out his signature vocals.

Like other rockers, even when some of Money's songs long since disappeared from the charts, they found new life in soundtracks to video games and a new stream of income and popularity. One such example is Money's mega-hit "Two Tickets to Paradise," which found a new fan base as a background on the popular game "Grand Theft Auto."

On the infield at Pocono Downs, Money rocked the early evening hours away, effectively urging people to "get up, move around and dance." As if he had to?! Eddie likes to call his fan base "Ed-Heads" and judging by reaction, there were plenty in attendance.

While Money's upper register may betray him these days, he more than makes up for it in energy and pizazz. If Money is merely a reflection of what once was, then he has perfected it. There was not a stream of endless new songs (only one by my count), but he really made the ones in his catalogue count.

Eddie somehow even pulled off "Take Me Home Tonight" (sans Ronnie Spector), and that's saying some. On stage Sunday evening, Eddie Money seemed as endearing and as well, able to re-create the magic he delivered in that first tour with Elvis Costello.

Money shimmered in his bright white suit (tie and shoes to match), and owned the crowd from the first few notes of "Baby Hold On." "Walk on Water," "I Wanna Go Back" and "Take a Little Bit" and had the post-disco, mid-punk feel of when they were recorded but worked amazingly well. Partly because they were fun songs to begin with and partly because Eddie still made them fun.

Now everyone, of course, can be learned, "EBGDAE" in any way and order. I personally do not / do not use mnemonic devices to help me with something so simple (at least for me). I felt need to support the guitar for beginners in the school, so that our teachers wanted to find a shortcut key Remember to turn lin. I know that everyone gets drunk at Easter and Eddie Ate Dynamite Good Bye Eddie. I want something funny: D I'm a joke and lighten the mood a bit, so I need something that gives a good laugh.
