Turkey: readers' tips, recommendations and travel advice
Start with a five-day break in Istanbul, stay at Mina Hotel (0090 212 458 2800; www.minahotel.com.tr) , just five minutes' walk from the big sights such as the Blue Mosque, Santa Sophia, Topkapi Palace, Cystern and Grand Baazar. There are wonderful views over Marmaris Sea and Blue Mosque from the hotel's rooftop terrace and transfers to and from the airport are available.
Take a tram (80p) to the waterfront at Eminuno, and catch the Bosporus day ferry cruise, leaving at 10.30am (it costs just £10). And take a day trip to the Prices Isles and enjoy a horse-and-trap tour. Then take internal flight south to Dalaman. Hire a car and travel east to Kalkan (two hours). Perhaps rent a villa and enjoy glorious sunshine, views and food in this lovely small seaside town. There are many places to visit locally and boat trips to outlying islands for safe swimming.

In Istanbul make sure you have lunch, dinner or just a delicious coffee sitting among the rooftops overlooking the Blue Mosque at the Safir Teras Café Restaurant (Divanyolu Street 16; www.safirsultanahmet.com) .
You need to look out for the restaurant's lectern at street level as you walk towards the bend of Divanyolu Street facing towards the Topkapi Palace. It is manned by a member of staff. He will guide you through a small shop to the lift and send you up to one of the best views in Turkey .

and perhaps hear the call to prayer from the Firuz Aga Mosque. Have your
photo taken with the Blue Mosque glinting majestically in the background by
one of the friendly staff.
