Better safe than sorry
A few weeks ago when I was called to look at a sick calf, I was taken a little by surprise with what I found. The owners of the farm thought the calf must have had something stuck in her throat since she was having trouble swallowing and was slobbering all over the place. When I examined the inside of the calf’s mouth, I saw what looked like ulcers. No large-animal veterinarian ever likes to see ulcers inside the mouth of a bovine. This could have been the first case of hoof and mouth disease in the country since the 1920s. It probably was not, but I certainly didn’t want to be known as the person who failed to recognize a case of hoof and mouth disease. Things like this make me lose sleep at night. This calf was obviously distressed. She held her head down, her ears were drooping and she appeared to be almost trying to choke down a mouthful of food. But she just couldn’t bear to swallow. And when I examined under her tongue, she almost came unglued with pain. And to make things even more interesting, she was running a fever, which is typical of a viral infection . Now, she was bright, alert and able to swallow. No more slobbering and choking and she looked like she wanted to eat a little. Feeling more than a little embarrassed about dragging the department veterinarian all the way from Altoona, I reiterated the severity of the symptoms observed earlier in the day. When we opened the calf’s mouth, almost all of the irritation was gone. I think my colleague was trying to humor me when she said, “I can kind of see some ulcers there under the tongue. Let’s get some samples.” We collected the necessary samples and informed the farmer of the requirement that no animals enter or leave the farm until the lab results were received. Before leaving, the other veterinarian reassured me that it was good to practice these things and that it was good that I called. It made me feel a little better. At least the calf wasn’t in distress anymore and I kept reminding myself that I didn’t want to be known as the veterinarian who missed hoof and mouth disease. Fortunately, the samples came back negative for contagious disease. In hindsight, we think the calf was outside grazing on some oxalate containing plants. These plants, like skunk cabbage, contain tiny crystals that can irritate the lining of the mouth. When we treated her with the analgesic, she felt better before we returned. At least that’s my story.Mouth Tongue Ulcer - News

She had ulcers in her mouth and under her tongue, just like the pictures I've seen of exotic viral diseases. This is the second time I've had the opportunity to train for a disaster. A few years ago I took a call about a sick cow one Sunday in October.
Mouth/Tongue Ulcer cures ?
He he mcwinner- must be my problem too! my daughter just suffered with a nasty ulcer- she used really strong salty water- which made it worse- the doctor said it actually burns you instead, so make sure you don't make it too strong, and the ulcer should start to heal pretty quickly! of course if it does not heal within a reasonable time, you should probably see your doctor who can then get the big guns out!
