Cape League: Anglers win wild one

June 27--CHATHAM -- In a Cape Cod Baseball League game highlighted by plays that ranged from utterly bizarre to downright spectacular, Sunday's ending didn't disappoint.

John Schiffner's Chatham Anglers pulled out their first home victory of the season in walkoff fashion -- a 6-5 triumph over the Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox -- but the veteran manager wasn't around to see it, having been ejected for arguing a check swing in the top of the third.

By the time Joe Sever (Pepperdine) singled home the winning run in the bottom of the ninth, the game had been inches from ending multiple times.

Clemson's Richie Shaffer -- who broke out of his 2-for-24 slump with three hits Sunday -- nearly gave Chatham the win earlier in the ninth as his drive struck the top of the right-field fence with a man on, but had to settle for a double.

The Anglers (5-8-1) loaded the bases with a walk Shaffer's double before Y-D (6-6-2) pulled Robert Benincasa (Florida State) in favor of Matt Carasiti in an attempt to hang onto its one-run lead. The St. John's righty nearly ended it himself, snagging a Alex Calbick (Maine) liner up the middle with his bare hand, freezing the Anglers' runners.

Dane Phillips was nearly doubled off as Carasiti fired to third, but the ball sailed just past the glove of Jacob Lamb (Washington), allowing Phillips to scamper home for the tie and putting Shaffer just 90 feet away with the winning run as Sever strode to the plate.

The win helped Chatham snap a three-game skid dating back to last Tuesday, when the Anglers helped Schiffner to his 400th career Cape League victory.

Harwich 7, Cotuit 3

COTUIT -- Two teams currently going in different directions continued their streaks afternoon at Lowell Park. The Eastern Division-leading Mariners notched their fifth consecutive victory while the Kettleers dropped their seventh straight game.

Errors contributed greatly to the defeat as Cotuit (4-9-1) had three miscues, including a two-base error in the outfield. Add in a 13-hit attack by Harwich (10-4) and the outcome was pretty much determined.

Chris Overman (N.C. State) picked up the win on the hill with 2 2/3 innings of scoreless relief in which he surrendered just one hit while fanning three. It was his first win of the summer.

Every player in the starting lineup collected at least one hit for Harwich, highlighted by a homer by Jake Davies (Georgia Tech).

7th Annual Student and Staff - Cape Cod Regional Technical High School

28 March 2011 – Cape Cod Regional Technical High School is presenting the 7th Annual Staff and Student Art Show, featuring works in visual media such as painting, drawing, graphic art, sculpture and digital art. The event is open to the public, and works displayed will be available for sale, with a percentage of the proceeds funding materials for student artists. There will also be art donated by established artists for sale at reduced prices, including works by Cape Cod Tech Director of Special Education, Gary Urgonski, whose sculpture “Victory of the Spirit" recently won Best in Show at the Cape Cod Art Association Show.

The show will run from April 13-15 and April 25-27 from 4:00pm to 7:00pm. Admission is free and refreshments will be available.
