A Burnaby man could now face the death penalty in Oklahoma after a background check he pursued in order to get a NEXUS pass, which allows speedier travel between the U.S. and Canada, revealed his alleged criminal past. U.S. Border Patrol officials arrested Suhail Shanti at the Pacific Highway crossing when a fingerprint test lined up with a warrant for his arrest in Oklahoma on first-degree murder charges dating back 28 years. The charge against Mr. Shanti relates to the shooting death of a Syrian student in December 1983. The midwestern state often applies the death penalty in first degree murder cases.

The new speed-on-green lights, which were used for whole of 2010, were credited with the 15% revenue boost . The Calgary Police Service would not comment on the report, but have said in the past that the money is not used for revenue, but is funneled back into the budget for making roads safer.

A nature conservancy group in Saskatchewan is hoping for the public’s help in protecting a fine feathered killer from getting, uh, killed . The Loggerhead Shrike, which hunts grasshoppers, beetles, garter snakes, mice, voles, frogs and sometimes other birds in the area, is a threatened avian species in the area and must be protected from land development, Nature Saskatchewan says . The group is hoping members of the public will report any sightings as they try to track the bird’s nesting grounds in order to stave off developers. Wonder what the frogs, mice and other prey have to say about that.
Montague, Ont.
This rural area southwest of Ottawa has said ‘Damn the beavers’ after the critters caused flooding across the region’s grassland this spring. The township has trapped and killed 40 beavers in order to keep water levels down in the area after a particularly soggy past few months. They’ve even enlisted help from the Rideau Valley Conservation Authority to help breach eight dams in the area. “Montague’s very flat,” Rudy Dyck, the Conservation Authority’s director of watershed stewardship services told the CBC. “So when you have a beaver that builds a three-foot dam, they flood hundreds of acres.
