Doctor warns about sunburn dangers
TARPON SPRINGS - People enjoying the great outdoors in the Sunshine State can get sunburn anytime of the year. Not taking precautions in the intense summer sun, however, sends most sun worshippers in search of medical attention.
Personnel in the emergency room at Helen Ellis Memorial Hospital began seeing an increase in the number of patients with bad sunburn about three weeks ago, explained Dr. Michael Longley, the E.R.'s medical director.
"People are outside enjoying the sun more," he said. "They forget to use sunscreen and they get can receive a bad burn, even on an overcast day."
Blisters are a sign of a second-degree burn, while sunburn is actually a first-degree burn, Longley said. Sunburn is particularly dangerous in the elderly, the young and people with illnesses.
Sunburn can occur quickly to any uncovered area of the skin. These include earlobes, eyelids, nose, neck and other parts of the body people often overlook when applying sunscreen, Longley said.
As a result, people should always wear sunscreen when going out in the sun and reapply it every two hours or when getting out of the water.
People should read the alerts on any medications they are taking because some can make people more susceptible to sunburn, Longley said. These include antibiotics, oral contraceptives and tranquilizers.
A person may not feel the symptoms of sunburn for up to 12 hours after excessive exposure, Longley said. The associated intense pain and heat, however, can last two or three days.
Blistering, which can occur one to two days after excessive sun exposure, is a sign of extreme sunburn, which can be accompanied by chills and fever.
Anyone with sunburn should drink plenty of water to prevent heat exhaustion from dehydration, Longley advised. People should seek medical attention if they have blisters covering a large area or the burn is accompanied by fever, rash or severe pain.
Relief from the pain of sunburn can be found in keeping the skin cool with cold compresses and baths. Aloe and moisturizers can help heal the skin, Longley said.
Some medical experts, such as doctors at www.mayoclinic.com , recommend against using Benzocaine on sunburn. The topical anesthetics has ingredient that have been linked to a rare but serious and potentially fatal, condition that decreases the amount of oxygen the blood can carry.
