Former employee gets 4 years for embezzlement

A former employee at the U.S. Forest Service's Arcadia office was sentenced to four years in federal prison for embezzling more than $1.4 million from the agency, federal prosecutors said Tuesday.

Kathy Stamps, 39, of Rancho Cucamonga was sentenced Monday by U.S. District Judge Christina A. Snyder in Los Angeles, who also ordered Stamps to pay more than $1 million in restitution.

Stamps worked as an accountant in the Forest Service's Arcadia office, where from early 2002 through October 2004 she manipulated records of funds donated by private parties to maintain roads and other projects on federal lands, officials said.

Stamps' scheme caused the U.S. Treasury to issue six refund checks totaling more than $1.4 million to entities Stamps controlled.

She spent much of the money on personal items, including cars, jewelry, mortgage payments and plastic surgery, officials said.

Crime victims invited to free educational clinic

A clinic for crime victims aimed at educating them about the Crime Victims Bill of Rights on 2008 will be held from 8:30 a.m. to noon July 9 at the Pasadena Police Department, 207 N. Garfield Ave.

It will feature prosecutors from the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office, Pasadena Superior Court, local police officials and other law-enforcement officials.

The event is free. Seating is limited.

Gold Line gets new trains to meet ridership increase

Beginning Monday, Metro will add additional train service on the Metro Gold Line in an effort to improve the frequency of trains during both morning and afternoon peak periods.

A total of five, two-car trains will be added to improve the service on the 19.7-mile rail line that operates between Pasadena and East Los Angeles, officials said.

Gold Line trains will operate every 6 minutes from 6 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. and from 3:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. The trains currently operate every 7 to 8 minutes during the peak periods.

Officials say the move is due to a continued growth in ridership. In May, ridership on the Metro Gold Line reached 36,623 average weekday boardings, compared to 32,434 in May 2010.
