Deadline Information The Miranda Lux Foundation accepts and reviews grant proposals on a continuing basis. The Board of Directors meets in February, May, August and November to consider grant proposals. Applicants should submit completed proposals at least seven weeks prior to each Board Meeting for consideration. Summary The Miranda Lux Foundation is a private foundation that continues the trust established by the will of Miranda W. Lux. Mrs. Lux was vitally interested in technical, manual and vocational education; fields that were newly being considered important to the general education of children. Miranda Lux died on September 20, 1894. In her will, she set aside approximately $500,000 to perpetuate her lifelong interest, which she expressed in this way: "It is my desire to assist in furnishing facilities for the education of young children in what is known as 'manual training' and all kinds of training by and through which habits of industry and practical knowledge of those things which are useful in earning a living may be acquired." It is the policy of the Miranda Lux Foundation to support innovative and promising pre-vocational and vocational education proposals that prepare young people for the world of work. The Foundation also supports innovative academic enrichment, technology training and performing and visual arts programs to help participants develop core job skills. The Foundation limits its grantmaking to organizations and programs within the city and county of San Francisco that serve young people under the age of 18. The Foundation prefers to award matching or challenge grants, and to leverage its support with funding from other sources. The Foundation will consider requests for multi-year funding for two or three years into the future to facilitate effective program planning by supported institutions. Grantmaking priorities for the Miranda Lux Foundation are as follows: (1) The Miranda Lux Foundation supports promising proposals for pre-school through junior college programs in the fields of pre-vocational and vocational education; (2) The foundation supports innovative academic enrichment, technology training and performing and visual arts programs to help participants develop core job skills; and (3) The foundation limits its grantmaking to organizations and programs within the city and county of San Francisco that serve young people under the age of 18.

The State of California is taking a page from the playbook of the u.s. Department of education. In an attempt to cut an almost $ 27 billion budget deficit, lawmakers are exploring the possibility of payments of the State of Cal Grant college student financial aid program on the basis of a school student loan default rate limit.

CAL grants are State-funded grants students with rates from $ 576 to $ 11,124 per year, depending on their degree program, to help pay for the college. Under the measure currently being considered by the State legislature, would schools whose default rate on student loans above a certain threshold are excluded from the provision of Cal grants to their students. Square in the crosshairs of the legislative move would be for-profit colleges and universities in California, many of these default rates are currently the proposed threshold.

Under the schools involved would be five for-profit Giants: the University of Phoenix; DeVry University; ITT Technical Institute; Kaplan Colleges; and Corinthian Colleges, that Everest College, Heald College and WyoTech operates.

Currently students of a vocational training program to a college community California qualify for annual Cal Grant awards of $ 576. Students of a vocational training program on a career training school or other non-community college setting as a for-profit school-are eligible for up to an additional $ 2,592 per year.

Students enrolled in a degree program of two years or four years to a private college-which for-profit schools-are eligible for up to $ 9,708 per year.

Recommendation of the Committee would Cal grants for students looking for vocational training certificates or degrees two years on a for-profit college at the maximum price for the first-year students enrolled in the program of the degree of at least one yearlimit, currently $ 1551.
