Three named Peach schools chief finalists
The other finalists are Dennis Carpenter, deputy superintendent for operations in Newton County, and Christie Johnson, assistant superintendent of administrative and student services in Carroll County.
The board announced the finalists at its study session Tuesday night, after interviewing six candidates Friday and Tuesday.
Those six were narrowed from 11 candidates the board interviewed June 7.
Thursday is the last official day for current Peach Superintendent Susan Clark, who is retiring after three years as the head of the district and with 40 years in education.
Denning, who has worked in Peach County schools since 1987, was among those present at Tuesday’s meeting.
“I’m excited, I’m terrified, I’m excited,”¿ Denning said after the announcement. “This is good. I’ve been here a long time. It’s a special time. I love kids, and I love the people here.”
The community will get a chance to meet the three candidates at a public forum July 5 from 7- 9 p.m. at Peach County High School’s auditorium.
The forum will coincide with the board’s regular 7 p.m. monthly meeting at the board office.
The board originally planned to move its monthly board meeting to 6 p.m. in order to schedule both meetings on the same night to move forward with the selection process. However, officials scrapped that idea, citing state law that would require the system to provide a two-week notice to change a regular meeting.
To get around that, three board members -- a quorum -- will be present at the board meeting, while the superintendent candidate forum will begin with the other two board members in attendance.
“We have really went through each candidate,” board Chairman Jamie Johnson said. “We’re excited to have the final three. We’re one step closer to making a selection.”
Now that the school district has released the names of the superintendent candidates, the earliest the board could take a final vote under state law is July 12.

Board formalizes E-Verify requirements on county contracts

The Carroll County Board of Commissioners’ resolution to formalize a policy will force contractors wanting to do business with the county to prove their workforce fulfills all requirements to legally work in the United States.
The board voted 4-0-1 Tuesday to change the county’s purchasing policy to reflect its decision in March to enroll in the federal E-Verify program. The program, developed by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, is an Internet-based system that allows an employer to determine the eligibility of its employees to work in the country.
The federal E-Verify program stipulates that the verification process would only be required on contracts awarded to employers of $100,000 or more and subcontracts of $3,000 of more. The county, however, requires a verification process on all contracts, no matter the dollar amount.
Comptroller Robert Burk said the E-Verify program would not apply to contracts awarded by the Carroll County Board of Education or contracts in which the county is partnering with the state or federal governments.
The county cannot require the state or federal governments to use E-Verify if they decide to piggyback on one of their contracts, like for laptops or police cruisers, Burk said
