Go Visit: Ritz-Carlton Laguna Beach
The California Coast has its fair share of options for families seeking either a local getaway or those venturing for a true vacation. Among the usual suspects of San Diego, Monterey, San Francisco and Los Angeles, just south of Los Angeles is a gorgeous beach town that’s typically visited by the posh set, but it’s growing in popularity by the mainstream.
And yes, I’m going to use the word “mainstream” when talking about a visit to the Ritz-Carlton Laguna Niguel. About 90 minutes south of Los Angeles — just between San Diego and the City of Angels — is the luxurious Laguna Niguel with it’s perfect beaches and sprawling mansions. And among a variety of hotels and resort, the Ritz-Carlton sits nestled on an oceanfront peak.
We spent a weekend at the Ritz-Carlton Laguna Niguel recently and the experience was everything you’d expect from a first-class resort without the pretentious-feel.
Guest Rooms: Standard guest rooms at the Ritz-Carlton Laguna Niguel are spacious and most either feature an ocean view or are poolside.
Dining: Dining options at the Ritz-Carlton Laguna Niguel are limited, but of the choices, all are excellent. We traveled with two families and favored the outdoor 180blu Lounge which featured a light menu (and kids menu) that overlooked the ocean. Raya , the main restaurant at the hotel, was booked each night we were there for dinner, however we went there for breakfast two mornings. The Market Place Coffee Shop was a frequent stop for snacks for the kids and the Dana Pool Cafe was our go-to for poolside lunches. Overall, prices were moderate considering the brand of hotel and the food was fantastic at each spot and service impeccable.
Kids Programs: The Ritz-Carlton Laguna Niguel took the cake for the best children’s programs we’ve come across. Their Ambassadors of the Environment program is a partnership with Jean-Michel Cousteau (son of Jacques Cousteau) which offers a variety of excellent daily activities for children including a whale-watching expedition, cooking classes that take advantage of fruits & vegetables from the hotel’s organic garden, nighttime beach creature lessons and more. Led by expert naturalists, our children learned about Southern California’s unique ecosystems, their connection to the larger global systems and had a blast while learning.
