Doctors urge ban on junk food ads: Would it work?
(CBS) Are TV ads for junk food making kids fat? The American Academy of Pediatrics thinks so, and it's issued a statement calling for a ban on the ads.
"We've created a perfect storm for childhood obesity - media, advertising, and inactivity," the statement's lead author, Dr. Victor Strasburger, said in a written statement . "American society couldn't do a worse job at the moment of keeping children fit and healthy - too much TV, too many food ads, not enough exercise, and not enough sleep."
The statement maintains that all those problems are linked. Obviously, "screen time" tends to displace physical activities that help keep weight off by burning calories. And late-night TV viewing can interfere with sleep, putting kids at higher risk for obesity.
In addition, studies have shown that children who watch lots of TV tend to snack more. One reason for that, according to the statement, is exposure to all those junk food ads.
Just how many food ads do kids see? Dr. Strasburger, a professor of pediatrics at the Univesity of New Mexico School of Medicine, put the number at 5,000 to 10,000 a year, adding that most of them push "junk food and fast food."
Studies have shown that kids allowed lots of tube time are more likely to eat high-calorie foods, drink sugary sodas, and grow up to be fat, Time's Healthland blog reported.
Last April, four government agencies put forth a set of voluntary principles governing the marketing of foods to children, Reuters reported. But the academy says voluntary won't cut it. As Dr. Strasburger put it, "Congress and the Federal Trade Commission have to get tough with the food industry. Just by banning ads for fast food, one study says we could decrease obesity and overweight by 17 percent."
In addition to calling for the ban, the academy encourages parents to talk to kids about food ads and good nutrition, and to limit kids' screen time to two hours a day.
