Joyce Jenereaux named president of Detroit Media Partnership

Joyce Jenereaux

President of the Detroit Media Partnership, which conducts the business operations of the Detroit Free Press and Detroit News.

Background: Born and raised in northwest Detroit. Educated at Eastern Michigan University (degree in business administration).

Personal: Single, age 57, two adult children, one granddaughter. Avid runner and practitioner of yoga.

Quote: "I am not a believer that print will ever go away. I think there's room for every different platform and every different way we disseminate information."

Growing up in a big household in northwest Detroit, Joyce Jenereaux recalled Tuesday, there was always a newspaper in her home, and later, when she had her own family, the tradition continued.

"I grew up reading the newspapers," said Jenereaux, the new president of the Detroit Media Partnership. "One of my brothers was a newspaper carrier. ... We've always had newspapers, never been without newspapers."

Now Jenereaux takes over the top executive job at the partnership, which conducts the business operations of the Detroit Free Press and Detroit News. Gannett, which owns the Free Press, named her to the top position Tuesday to succeed Susie Ellwood, now executive vice president and general manager of USA TODAY.

Jenereaux, 57, was executive vice president of the media partnership under Ellwood. Since joining the organization in 1990, she has held various positions, including financial reporting manager, assistant controller, controller, vice president and senior vice president of finance.

With David Hunke (now USA TODAY publisher and president), Ellwood and Free Press Editor and Publisher Paul Anger, Jenereaux helped frame Detroit's new publishing model -- which emphasizes digital delivery of news and information as well as publishing newspapers every day.

On Tuesday, Jenereaux recalled how she was hired after answering a classified ad and how her original ambition was to become a senior financial analyst.

"It was not totally clear to me 21 years ago where I'd eventually get to -- I'm totally happy," she said.

In an e-mail announcement to Detroit staffers, Hunke praised Jenereaux's long experience.

"Joyce has more than 20 years of experience leading and guiding this company," said Hunke, who led the media partnership and the Free Press before going to USA TODAY in 2009. "Joyce played an integral role shaping strategy and outlining a plan for the future. She will no doubt continue the tradition of innovative thinking that has become the norm for Detroit.
